Abstract

The project presents the creation of a cultural centre at Sedhiou in Senegal. It aims to tell the traditions of the different peoples of the territory and to represent them as an enrichment especially for new generations so that they have concrete testimonies in addition to those orally got from the elderly citizens. The sourrounding inhabited area is characterized by villages composed of small buildings that are differently close together. For this reason the project looks like a microcity whose buildings are located to recall the village structure and are connected by an informative and cultural path at the same time. The only architectonic element that skirts the entire project area in the longitudinal direction on the east side is the gallery that is the entry point and the one from which the project develops and refers to. In addition to those reserved for services and offices in the other buildings there are rooms which can be used for research workshops projections conferences and teaching. A large building is dedicated to the exhibition of pictures and objects concerning the daily life of people during the years (clothes tools hunting and war weapons and so on...). The open spaces can be used as meeting places or for shows and performances. The materials are those easily available in the area: clay bricks for the walls planking and sheet metal for the roofs.
